CleanTably and Slipsheet both turn paper into rows, but they answer different questions. One converts a document once. The other keeps a ledger you add to all year.
Which one should you use?
Use CleanTably when you have one document and want a free .xlsx of it; use Slipsheet when you are a freelancer who needs every receipt in one reviewable ledger you can export the same way each time.
| CleanTably | Slipsheet | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is for | Turning one document into a spreadsheet you download | Keeping every receipt as a row in one ledger you come back to |
| Files | PDF, PNG, JPG or JPEG, up to 5 MB each | JPG, PNG, HEIC or PDF on the web, or forwarded receipt emails on a paid plan |
| Sign up | Your first file starts without an email; the site asks for one before the next file | An account, starting with a 14-day free trial, no card needed |
| Output | An editable .xlsx; the columns follow whatever is on the document | One CSV, always the same nine columns, from every receipt you have reviewed |
| Review | Check the extracted rows in the browser, then download | Review and fix each row in your ledger before it goes into an export |
| Across many receipts | Each file is its own spreadsheet | One row per receipt, with category, client_tag and notes |
| Sync | Not listed | Google Sheets sync on Pro |
| Price | Free tier at no cost, with rate limits; paid tiers are mentioned in its terms | Starter $5/mo for up to 250 receipts; Pro $12/mo for up to 1,500 |

What CleanTably does well
CleanTably is built for the single file. Drop in a PDF, PNG, JPG or JPEG up to 5 MB, and it pulls out the table hiding inside: headers, dates, descriptions, quantities, amounts and line items, across multiple sheets when the document needs them. You review the rows in the browser and download an editable .xlsx.
The first file starts without an email, and there is a free tier. Its terms cap free use at 10 conversions an hour and say paid tiers delete files right after conversion. For one invoice, one statement or one long receipt, that is a sensible tool, and the output follows the document instead of a fixed template.
Where a one-off conversion runs out
A freelancer does not have one receipt. You have a coffee with a client on Monday, software on Tuesday and a supplies run on Friday, every week, for a year. Converting each one gives you a pile of spreadsheets, each shaped by its own document. At tax time someone has to merge them by hand into one list with the same columns.
That is the gap: not reading a receipt, but keeping all of them in one place, in one shape, with your own notes on which client each belongs to.
What Slipsheet does instead
Slipsheet keeps a ledger. Upload JPG, PNG, HEIC or PDF files on the web, or, on a paid plan, forward receipt emails with the files attached. Each receipt becomes one row you can review and fix before it goes into an export.
The export is always one CSV named slipsheet-YYYYMMDD.csv with the same nine columns: date, merchant, total_amount, currency, tax_amount, category, client_tag, notes, file_name. It opens in Excel or Google Sheets, and QuickBooks and Xero take it through their CSV import. Google Sheets sync is on Pro. For the general job, see how to convert receipts to a spreadsheet and receipt to Excel.
From receipt to row (example data)
| date | merchant | total_amount | currency | tax_amount | category | client_tag | notes | file_name |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-04-03 | Amazon Web Services | 428.17 | USD | 0.00 | Software | monthly hosting | 01-aws.png | |
| 2026-04-14 | Adobe Inc | 59.99 | USD | 5.25 | Software | Creative Cloud | 03-adobe.png | |
| 2026-04-22 | Uber Technologies | 24.83 | USD | 2.15 | Travel | Client A | to client site | 05-uber.png |
| 2026-05-12 | Home Depot | 156.88 | USD | 12.91 | Supplies | Client B | install job | 10-homedepot.png |
| 2026-05-21 | Zuni Cafe | 148.72 | USD | 12.24 | Meals | Client A | client dinner | 12-zuni.png |
These five rows are example data. Dates, merchants, totals and tax come from a synthetic receipt test set; category, client_tag and notes are illustrative. The totals add up to 818.59, with 32.55 in tax. Every export has these columns in this order, so last month and this month line up.
Using both
They do not compete for every job. If a client sends you a long PDF statement and you only need its table once, CleanTably is a reasonable pick. If the job is keeping your own receipts straight all year, a ledger saves the cleanup later.
Pricing
Slipsheet Starter is $5/mo for up to 250 receipts. Pro is $12/mo for up to 1,500 receipts plus Google Sheets sync. Both start with a 14-day free trial, no card needed. Try Slipsheet.
